Our Mission

Red Robot Hackathon aims to be an unforgettable experience for novice and veteran hackers alike!

We are a group of passionate hackers and makers from the CMU Robotics Club who want spread our love of creating through a hardware-based hackathon. Traditionally, hardware hacking's barrier of entry has been pretty high. Even after that flash of inspiration, you still need a pretty expansive collection of parts, tools, and expertise to create your idea. Having gone through this process before, we know just how limiting these obstacles can be. That's why we're here to present the Red Robot Hackathon: a hardware hackathon designed to help anyone with any level of experience to bring their idea to life!

Red Robot aims to break down the border between novices and hacking by providing a complete network of support for beginner and expert makers alike. Each team will get a starter kit of parts, which can be used for your own hacking or to participate in our secret competition. Qualified mentors are available to help all hackers -- from those learning how to blink an LED to those pushing the boundaries of what's possible. In addition, plenty of food, drinks, and prizes will be provided to fuel you and your project. We can't wait to see what you make!

Why Red Robot?

Why should you spend your weekend at Red Robot Hackathon?

Beginner Friendly

We'll have instructions on how to build a robot from the starter kit, which you can expand on and use to participate in our secret competition!

Mentors will be available all weekend to help with anything and everything related to hardware hacking!

Meet new people who share your interests, hang out with your team, and make friends with all of our generous sponsors!

No hackathon would be complete without prizes. We'll have awards for both freeform hacking and our secret competition!

Bring the project you've always dreamed of to life, and be inspired by those around you doing the same thing!

You'll get to keep the projects you make (including the starter kits), and get a Red Robot Hackathon t-shirt too!

Mentors are the lifeblood of any hackathon. All of our hackers will be pushing their limits and trying new things as they build their projects. They'll no doubt come across obstacles and stumbling blocks, and they'll be relying on you to help get them reach the finish line. Red Robot Hackathon is open to hackers of all skill levels and disciplines, and we need our mentors to meet the same criteria. Put another way, if you're thinking about mentoring at all, sign up! There will definitely be something for you to do.

Why You Should Mentor

  • Make lasting connections with other mentors and our hackers!
  • Share your experience and talk about your work with students!
  • Receive our (and the hackers') undying love and appreciation!

Below are some of the most Frequently Asked Questions about Red Robot Hackathon. If your question isn't answered below, please don't hesitate to contact us!

What is Red Robot?
A hardware hackathon for the CMU community, hosted by the Robotics Club over Midsemester break.
While participation in the hackathon is open to all, we're specifically trying to introduce beginners to hardware hacking. If you're particularly experienced, we ask that you consider signing up as a mentor.
None! There will be plenty of mentors around ready to help teams learn skills and use club resources to bring your idea to life!
Definitely not! There will always be an officer around to keep the club, and shop, open if needed, however it is not mandatory to stay for the entire 36 hour hacking session. We only ask that you attend the judging ceremony at the end.
Where will the Hackathon take place?
Hackers can use resources and tools in the Robotics Club, but the majority of work should take place in Andy's Alcove, both of which are located in the University Center basement, near the PNC office.
It is recommended that people work in teams of 2-5 people. If you need help creating a team, register and we will help you find team members! Also, be sure to attend the mixer to meet potential team members!
We'll be running a competition (details kept secret for now) which you can participate in. Feel free to test the limits of your creativity!
We respectfully ask that you wait until hacking officially begins, so that every team has an equal and fair chance.
